Post Independent- Health and Wellness Expo Draws a Crowd In Glenwood

Post Independent

GLENWOOD SPRINGS — The second annual Health & Wellness Expo held at the Ramada Inn on Saturday, April 27, was well-attended, and vendors and visitors were all smiles.

The expo was powered by volunteers. Here, volunteer Donna Fell of Glenwood Springs chats with fellow Glenwood resident Chris Tribble of Be Heard TV, who filmed the event.

Along the halls and throughout the venue, conversation bubbled over as visitors to the expo were able to ask questions, receive services and develop new relationships with local wellness providers. A wide variety was found at the expo, including massage, chiropractic, dental, nutritional supplements, health coaching, art, energy healing, yoga, osteopathic medicine, personal training and much more.

While the booths seemed to draw the most attention, workshops and seminars were conducted throughout the day as well. Expo attendees were treated to movement workshops in the form of yoga, chakra dancing, fitness workouts and singing bowls.

Positive comments were heard as people filed out of the Ramada at the end of the event.

“It was a great success.” said Dr. Stephanie Stanfield, co-chair of the event, “We sold out of all of our booths, and the vendors were phenomenal. The many participants with whom I spoke said it was a great opportunity to get to know the natural health care providers that are in our valley.

“We had helpful volunteers that made sure the event ran smoothly,” she added. “All the participants got into the spirit of the event and everyone had fun and learned something.”

A Resource To Know About - Good Seed Community Garden

2013 Season Opening April 13th
Everyone is invited to Good Seed Community Garden KICKOFF meeting: Thursday April 11th | 7pm | Gathering Center

Last year we opened up with 40 garden plots. This year we will be adding 45+ more garden plots. Garden sizes and yearly fees are: $25 for 5 ft x 10 ft (50 SF), $32 for 10 ft trapezoid (75 SF) and $40 for a 5 ft x 20 ft (100 SF). Email garden@theorchardlife.com and give us your name, phone# and interested plot size.

Garden opens Saturday April 13th for 2013 season.
 Mission
The Garden at Carbondale (Good Seed Garden at The Orchard) will provide a place where community members can gather to enjoy gardening together, share knowledge, promote gardening and provide for the physical & spiritual needs of the community.

The garden will foster community cooperation with the church, individual citizens, local government, business, charitable organizations and educational institutions.

It will provide gainful employment opportunities to members of the community and educational opportunities for local school students.

In concert with local organizations and businesses, the Good Seed Garden will serve as a resource to preserve knowledge of local horticultural practices, introduce new crops to the Roaring Fork Valley and demonstrate new methods of growing and preserving food crops locally.
Description
The Orchard, located at 110 Snowmass Drive, Carbondale announces plans for its newest project, the Good Seed Community Garden. The Good Seed Community Garden is located on the north side of The Orchard property and will feature 39 garden plots in 2 size; 4’ by 10’ and 4’ by 20’. The annual cost for a small plot is $25 and $40 for the large plot. Garden plots will be assigned through a lottery from interested gardeners that have completed an application. Plots will be assigned the week of March 25.

The Good Seed Community Garden will be unique in that as part of signing the gardening agreement, gardeners will be asked to contribute 10% of their produce to those in need through either Lift-Up or Feed My Sheep. Debi Boyle, the Carbondale food pantry coordinator from Lift-up said, “This is a great need because the Lift-Up program can’t supply fresh produce for a balanced diet. We would love it!”

The Good Seed Community Garden recently received a generous grant from the Harvey Family Foundation and is also partnering with local businesses to provide discounts for gardeners to purchase items like seed and tools. The garden has already received generous donations of compost, fertilizer, sand and services to ready the land for planting. The garden is looking for donations of materials to build fencing , raised beds as well as pipe for the irrigation system.

Peer Pressure Can Be Your Body's Best Friend

AT THE BEGINNING of every new year, many of us put “Get into shape” at the top of our resolution list. Normally, though, our good intentons don’t last beyond Valentine’s Day before we begin to slip back into old habits. Melaleuca suggests a way to prevent that.
If you have failed to keep your resolution, don’t quit for good. Just make sticking to your goals your friends’ job too.

Here are some tips on how to get your friends to help you out:

Share Your Triumphs and Struggles

Use Twitter to share all your ups and downs. Be honest. Follow your favorite fitness guru, weight loss diet, or health expert to get regular updates on the latest workout routines, healthy recipes, and daily motivation to keep you going. Retweet helpful videos, photos, and tips for your friends and family who are working to shed a few pounds too.
Create a Private Group

Utilize the Groups function of Facebook and invite friends and family to join you in your quest for fitness. Establish weekly or monthly goals and set up simple competitions with rewards for those who reach them. Post your success stories, health tips, exercise videos, funny dieting jokes or photos, and anything else that will help you and your friends stay committed. Take the encouragement to heart and post plenty yourself.
Track It All on Your Phone

It used to be that tracking your caloric intake involved carrying a notebook around with you throughout the day or trying to rely on your memory for an accurate account of meals and snacks. Now counting calories is just an app away. Snap a picture of the bar code on a bottle of juice or manually type in items from the menu of your favorite restaurant. Making healthy meal choices and tracking what you’re eating while you’re out has never been easier.

You don’t have a smart phone?

No worries. Many portable MP3 players can track your workout and upload the data through a wifi connection when you get home—even if you don’t have a data plan. They can also be helpful during meal planning.

If you really want to reach your goals, get your friends to help out. They will be happy to pitch in … and remember, “Where there is a will, there is a way.”
